When we first launched, you connected your Tesla using a third party integration provider. After a while, we built a custom integration to the official Tesla Owner Application Programming Interface (API), which granted Optiwatt access to your Tesla information and allowed us to send commands directly to your Tesla vehicle. This unlocked the things you love about Optiwatt, such as EV Scheduling and Smart Charging.
In 2024, Tesla introduced a brand new API that they are slowly rolling out across all of their vehicles to one day entirely replace the Owner API; this new API is known as the Fleet API.
The Fleet API supports official oAuth integrations with third-party applications. Optiwatt was the first consumer third-party app to use the Fleet API. This allows for more secure, permission-based connections to vehicle commands.
Since introducing the Fleet API, Tesla has slowly been phasing out all Owner API connections. This means that if you do not upgrade your connection to make the switch over to the Fleet API, at some point you will lose access to all control features of Optiwatt. Upgrading is crucial to ensure you continue to benefit from our app.
Rest assured, the upgrade process prioritizes the security of your information. Through end-to-end encryption and robust security measures, your data is handled with the utmost confidentiality and protection. Our privacy-first approach allows you to review and control the permissions granted to Optiwatt even after the upgrade. This ensures transparency and puts you in control of your data.
In order to re-authenticate your Tesla onto Optiwatt, you'll need to grant the Fleet API permissions and set up your virtual key. More information on this process here.
Please note that as of April 2025, depending on your vehicle model you may be unable to connect to the Fleet API. This is especially true if you have a pre-2021 Tesla Model S or X. If this applies to your vehicle, you'll see a warning in Optiwatt that asks you to update your car’s software and come back to see if you can fix this. If you are an owner of one of those vehicles, we recommend reaching out to Tesla Support to ask about when this connection will be made available to you.
